I want to introduce to you the designer of the wonderful mandala art that is featured in next years The Travel Obsessive FREE calendar and goal planner. Maren Tigges is a self taught mandala artist and fellow travel lover who has her own business in creating the most stunning fusion of travel themed mandala art. I urge you to check out her work and support her too! Details of how to get your FREE digital download of The Travel Obsessive Goal Planner and Calendar are listed at the bottom of the article.

Q1. You mention that you are self taught, how long did it take you to learn this process, did it come naturally or was it something you had to work at? I started drawing mandalas in 2015 (I was 15 years at that time) because I admired the work of other mandala artists I saw on Instagram. Teaching myself how to draw mandalas was a very gradual and intuitive process, I started with simple designs that became more and more intricate and complicated to draw over time. In that sense it came very naturally because I did not rush the process and I did not try to create incredibly intricate designs in the beginning. My art is still evolving so it feels like I am still in the process of learning how to draw mandalas as much as I was in 2015.

Q2.  What is your favourite piece you have created so far, what was the meaning and inspiration behind it? My favourite artwork that I have created so far is the World Map Mandala, which is a detailed drawing of the world map, surrounded by intricate mandalas. I created it while planning my gap year/ a year of backpacking and dreaming of all the places I could go. It took 60 hours to complete. The World Map Mandala is also the mandala I have sold the most prints of. I created it as an inspiration for travellers, explorers and those who wish to be!

Q3.Where do you get your inspirations from? Do some of them come from your travels, or is there something else that inspires your designs?  Inspiration for my art comes from many sources, but especially travel and nature. Intricate patterns can be found all over the natural world. Furthermore I am inspired by sacred geometry, a system that ascribes sacred meanings to certain geometric shapes. Inspiration for certain patterns also comes from architecture (especially beautifully decorated mosques or temples). A big part of my work are commissions where I am inspired by peoples ideas and then mix those with my style.

Q4. What are some of the places you have travelled, where was your favourite destination and why?
I started to develop my love for traveling and different cultures quite early since my family and I travelled quite frequently. Some of the best memories I have are from a family trip to Costa Rica in 2012. My favourite destination is Australia though, where I lived for 6 months as a high school exchange student in the beautiful Blue Mountains. I later came back for a working holiday and continued to explore this beautiful country and met some incredible people. It does feel like a second home. The most beautiful place I have ever been to was Lanikai beach on Oahu, Hawaii. Because of Covid I cancelled my travel plans for this year.

Q5. You also are a Yoga teacher and massage therapist, it seems you have a passion for mental and physical health – any tips for dealing with stress during these tough times? I do have a strong passion for physical and mental health which is why I study psychology and health in uni now. My number one tip for dealing with stress or anxiety in these tough times is yin yoga, a restorative practice where poses are held for a longer period of time than in regular yoga classes. Yin yoga targets your deep connective tissues, like your fascia, ligaments and joints. It’s slower and more meditative, giving you space to turn inward and tune into both your mind and the physical sensations of your body. In times of the pandemic, you can practice at home by yourself or for beginners sign up to an online class.
